In 1960, work on the displays at the museums in Heraklion and Chania continued, and a suitable venue for the museum at Aghios Nikolaos was prepared. Collections at the Historical Museum of Crete and Rethymnon Museum were enriched. The Metaxas Archaeological Collection was founded. Restoration work was carried out at Knossos, at Megaron Nirou,. Malia, Phaistos and on medieval monuments in Heraklion, Chania and Rethymnon province. Excavations were conducted at sites in Heraklion and Chania and in the environs of Archanes, Katsambas, Mitropoli by Gortyna, Lebena and Chondros (Viannos), Olous, Tourtouli and Lissos. Underwater surveys were conducted in the sea between Agia Galini and Kokkinos Pyrgos. The foreign schools of archaeology continued their excavations at Knossos, Malia and Phaistos. Noteworthy chance finds came to light at various locations on the island. |
