It was in this capacity that he travelled to Crete to bolster efforts during the siege of Chandax. Once the island had been retaken from the Arabs, he worked alongside Ioannis the hermit and Nicon Metaoneite to restore Orthodoxy, thus carrying out an Athonite mission. Thereafter he withdrew to the Holy Mountain, where with Phocas’ assistance he founded the Monastery of Megisti Lavra and re-organised Athonite monasticism.
