Summary PDF
In 1959, display work continued at Heraklion Museum. Additions were made to collections at the Historical Museum of Crete, to the museums in Chania and Rethymnon and to the collections in Agios Nikolaos and Ierapetra. Restoration work was carried out at Knossos, Phaistos and Chersonissos. A number of Venetian and Ottoman monuments in Heraklion, Rethymnon, Chania and inland Crete were protected. Excavations were carried out at Temenos, Giofyrakia, Prinias, Viannos, Lebena and Sitia, as well as in the city of Chania, at Lissos, the Basilica at Kastri, Chersonissos and in the village of Veran Episkopi, Rethymnon. The foreign Schools of Archaeology continued excavations at Knossos, Phaistos and the Aghia Triada area. A test dig was carried out at Aghia Roumeli. Noteworthy chance finds came to light, and archaeological sites were identified at various locations on the island.
