Presentation of references to the siege of Candia made in English State Papers. It is argued that little mention of the Cretan War is made in the country’s diplomatic papers prior to 1666, since the Turkish presence was not seen as a threat to English interests. Two extensive references are reproduced: a letter from Thomas Lynch, personal assistant to Chief Secretary of State Lord Arlington, describing the failed offensive against the Turks led by the Duke of Beaufort in 1669, and a satirical "Last Will and Testament of the City of Candia" written in Italian, in which a number of defenders are lambasted. |
