Title
Cretan philology II. Observations on Apokopos
Summary PDF
Publication of a number of critical and interpretive observations on Bergadis’ Apokopos. The word πάλιον in line 295 is related to the Italian word palio, i.e. the horse races that were the favourite sport in medieval Florence. The word φόσσα in line 332 is interpreted as “anchorage” and is linked to the stretch of water west of the harbour at Chandax. It is argued that in many cases the Vienna manuscript, which Linos Politis had regarded as “entirely useless” for the critical restoration of Apokopos, transmits better forms. The paper investigates the possibility that the last part of the work may have been adulterated and extended. The densely packed constructive comments it includes may possibly have been added by a cleric.
