Title
Cretan philology I. Methodological issues in Cretan literature
Summary PDF
Further to Linos Politis’ observations on the critical restoration of three Cretan texts, which appeared in Volume XII of the Kretika Chronika, this paper examines a number of methodological problems faced by publishers of Cretan literature. The reliability of Venetian commercial and popular editions is assessed. Stress is placed on the importance of internal logical consistency in the works and the value of certain morphological criteria such as the language, syntax, style and versification of individual poets when gauging the authenticity of transmitted forms. Undue adherence to sources is criticized. Lastly, the paper investigates cases in which the principle of uniformity can be applied.
