Following the annexation of Crete to the Venetian state, the Orthodox see and dioceses passed to Catholic priests. One third of the estates in the hands of the Venetian state were granted to the Roman Church. During this first period, senior Catholic clergy often clashed with the Venetian authorities over financial issues and matters of jurisdiction. In the early 1320s, Doge of Venice Giovanni Soranzo came to an agreement with Archbishop Alexandros of Crete over the ownership status of certain churches in the suburbs of Chandax. A list was also drawn up of the 130 priests on Crete falling within the jurisdiction of the Latin Archdiocese.
