Greifen am Thron, erschienen bei Bruno Grimm, Baden-Baden 1959. Σελίδες 131, εικόνες 75 | Summary PDF | In his book entitled Erinnerungen. Greifen am Thron [Memoirs. Griffins by the Throne], Georg Karo, the Nestor of prehistoric and classical archaeology, offers a magnificent comprehensive view of Minoan civilisation. Citing his memories of the first excavations on Crete, he refers to the methods and achievements of Evans and his associates. Karo deals with a series of important topics, such as Minoan architecture, wall painting, sculpture, miniature sculpture on sealstones, metalworking and pottery. He traces the relations between Minoan and Mycenaean civilisation and adopts a position on the problem of its origin. He also raises the issue of distinguishing genuine finds from forgeries. The work is richly illustrated. It does, however, contain some minor inaccuracies. |
