A discussion of the Homeric term “Crete of the hundred cities” with lists of place-names known from ancient Greek and Byzantine sources. 16th-century authors (Buondelmonti, Niger, Barozzi, Andrea Cornaro) compiled lists of the 100 cities, which are however full of errors and imaginary names. Certain later European writers compiled more scientific lists. Faure’s study is based on the epitome of Stephen of Byzantium’s On Cities, numismatics, inscriptions and ancient literature. A list of 102 place-names from Hellenistic sources and 23 from Roman sources is provided, together with 30 “false” names and discussion of 15 repeated names. 125 settlement sites are given in total, of which 74 have been identified with certainty, 26 have been roughly located and 25 remain unknown. |
