The painted cross-roofed church of Aghios Georgios Anydriotis stands in the hamlet of Anydra in Selino district. According to an inscription preserved in the westernmost pilaster of the south wall, the painted decoration is the work of Ioannis Pagomenos, and dates to 1323. Compositions featuring large numbers of figures extend over the flat and curved surfaces of the building, following the established order with a degree of freedom. The piers and pilasters bear full-length, en face depictions of the saints, creating a sense of monumental immobility. The surviving frescoes are presented in detail. Alongside archaic eastern elements, a number of Macedonian and Paleologue stylistic influences are discernible. The artist’s fluid hand reveals folk-type leanings. |
