An unknown source for Chortatsis’ Erofili: Tasso’s tragedy Il re Torrismondo
Summary PDF
Giovanni Battista Giraldi’s Orbecche and Torquato Tasso’s Gerusaleme Liberate have been indicated as Italian sources for Chortatsis’ Erofili. A further work by Tasso which influenced the Cretan poet is here pointed out: the tragedy Il Re Torrismondo, first published in 1587. In act II, scene ii, a terrified Erofili describes to her nanny the same nightmarish visions that the young Almida relates to her own Nutrice in Act I, Scene i of Re Torrismondo. Chortatsis adapted the original with a degree of freedom, remoulding it poetically. Approximately 50 years later, the same source was used by the Rethymnon poet Ioannis Andreas Troilos in his less independent and original tragedy Rodolinos.
