In 1958, display work continued at Heraklion Museum. Additions were made to collections at the Historical Museum of Crete, to the museums in Chania and Rethymnon and to the collections in Gortyna, Neapoli, Aghios Nikolaos and Ierapetra. Consolidation and restoration work was carried out at Knossos, Amnissos, Phaistos and Aghia Triada. A number of Venetian and Ottoman monuments in Heraklion and Chania were protected. Excavations were carried out at Lissos, Archanes, Moni (Malevizi), Kato Vatheia (Pediada), Atsalenio (Heraklion), Rotasi, Aptera, Kalyvia (Messara), Lebena and Vyzari. The foreign Schools of Archaeology carried out excavations at Mitropoli (Gortyna), Phaistos, Aghios Georgios Falantras and at Knossos. Noteworthy chance finds came to light, and archaeological sites were identified at various locations on the island. |
