Among other sources relating to Cretan history, Codex Mss. Ital. Cl. VII 918 (=8932) held in the Biblioteca Marciana in Venice includes statistical information on the administrative subdivision of Crete in the 16th century, and on the island’s fortresses, villages and population. The census dates back to the late 16th century, after the great plague that tormented the island in 1592-3. The greater part of this information is published here in the Italian original together with a Greek translation, supplemented by detailed commentary. This is accompanied by a map of the regions and castellanies of Crete, and by Francesco Basilicata’s plans of the fortresses at Mylopotamos, Apokoronas, Selino and Sfakia. |
