Observations on Cretan texts
Summary PDF
This article provides an exact transcription of the Aparnemene ton Chanion [Jilted Lass of Chania] from the poet’s own hand, alongside a new critical edition. The work is attributed to an early 16th century Cretan man of letters, who attempted to adapt Theocritus’ Second Idyll to his own age. Politis also points out that in publishing the Phyllada tou Gaidarou (Chapbook of the Donkey), Lefteris Alexiou made a number of inappropriate corrections, and did not consider the first Venetian edition of the work, which restores certain passages. Finally, he stresses that neither Stephanos Xanthoudides, who published Erofili, nor Stylianos Alexiou, who made observations on critical restoration, consulted the first edition by Matthaios Kigalas, though better readings can occasionally be discerned behind his learned forms.
