Title
A contribution to the history of Vrontisi Monastery
Summary PDF
The Cretan monastery of Aghios Antonios at Vrontisi was a hive of intellectual and artistic activity during the final phase of Venetian rule. First attested in the second half of the 15th century, the monastery began to flourish towards the end of the following century, when a number of eminent Cretan intellectuals such as Lavrentios Marinos served as abbot. This paper presents accounts of the monastery’s history and the activities of its monks from the late 15th to the 19th century. These are mostly in the form of archive material from the Venetian Archives and the Heraklion Turkish Archive, reminiscences and notes in codices, and letters sent to Lavrentios Marinos by Dionysios Katelianos, Kyrillos Loukaris, Meletios Pegas and Maximos Margounios.
