During the Cretan uprising of 1866-1869, Stephanos Skouloudis was one of the most active members of the Committee formed by fellow Greeks in Constantinople in support of the struggle. He collaborated with Irokleas Vasiades, an Epirot doctor and philologist, who acted as a go-between for the Constantinople Committee and the Central Committee in Athens. Skouloudis kept Vasiades’ secret reports in his archives, together with correspondence from 1866-68 concerning the activities of the committees established in Athens, Constantinople and other areas to support the revolutionaries on Crete. A small portion of the archive material came to light by chance and is published here, accompanied by relevant commentary. |
