In 1957, display work continued at Heraklion Museum. Additions were made to collections at the Historical Museum of Crete and the museums in Ierapetra, Aghios Nikolaos, Gortyna, Rethymnon and Chania. Consolidation and restoration work was carried out at Knossos and Phaistos. A number of Venetian and Ottoman monuments in Heraklion were protected. Excavations and work to collect antiquities were carried out at Archanes, Chondros (Viannos), Mitropoli, Selopoulo, Mathia (Pediada), Gortyna, Athanatoi (Maelvizi), Kamilari, Gazi, Poros (Katsambas), Aghios Konstantinos and Aghios Ioannis (Heraklion), Lyttos and in the village of Petrokefali. A survey expedition to Kastri in Keratokambos was held. Noteworthy chance finds came to light, and archaeological sites were identified at various locations on the island.
