In 1956, work on the Heraklion Museum exhibition continued and new material was added to the Historical Museum of Crete, the Ierapetra, Aghios Nikolaos and Gortys Collections, and the Museums of Rethymnon and Chania. The Neapoli Collection was organised. Consolidation and restoration work was carried out at Knossos, Phaistos, Tylissos, the Vathypetro Megaron and the Hersonissos fountain. Certain Byzantine and medieval monuments of Heraklion and Amari were protected. There were archaeological excavations at Vathypetro, Archanes, the Idaean Cave, Onythe in Goudeliana, the Early Christian basilica of Kera, Zou in Sitia, Episkopi in Piskokefalo, Malia, Phaistos, Gortys, Katsambas, Poros in Heraklion, Tefeli in Monofatsi, Viannos and Nipiditos. Important chance finds and new archaeological sites also came to light at various places on the island.
