Title
Cretan refugees of 1667
Summary PDF
The building of the Zakynthos Archives, which was destroyed in the earthquake and fire of 1953, contained important archival material on the Cretan refugees in Zakynthos. The contents of some documents were preserved thanks to the notes and transcripts of archivist Leonidas Zois. They include the information that the monks of the Cretan church of Aghios Ioannis o Prodromos (St John the Baptist), who came to Zakynthos in 1669, brought with them icons and ecclesiastical vessels which they dedicated to the church of Aghios Nikolaos tou Molou (St Nicholas of the Mole). The monks also became part of the brotherhood of the church. The list of their names is published here. The wills of the Cretans Antonis Lourotomos and Michelakis Kladou are also published; they were drawn up by the notary Ioannis Kottis in August 1681 and June 1684 respectively.
