Title
The Lord of Patras
Summary PDF
Examination of historical circumstances in the 13th and 14th centuries, presenting evidence in favour of the hypothesis that the Lord of Patras in Erotocritos is not a Greek, but an Albanian or a Turk. On the basis of the Lord’s extremely barbaric behaviour, questions are raised as to Xanthoudides’ original theory that he is a Greek, but is portrayed as savage as a foil to Spidholion. Alexiou’s hypothesis that he may have been a Turk is seen as convincing, though the possibility of his being an Albanian is not excluded.
