Cretan essays: I. Two Cretan paintings in the Walters Art Gallery, Baltimore
Summary PDF
Two Cretan paintings were discovered in the Walters Art Gallery in Baltimore: an icon by Emmanuel Tzane and a carved wooden painted triptych. The icon depicts the Virgin and Child, St John the Baptist and St Philip. On comparing this with other, dated works by Tzane, it emerges that this icon may be dated to the period 1660-1680. The central panel of the triptych bears a faithful representation of a carved wooden icon screen. It is dated to the late 17th or the first half of the 18th century and is attributed, with reservations, to Ioannis Moskos. It appears that the person at whose request the triptych was produced, and whose coat of arms appears on it, wished to have depicted on it the interior of his private chapel, which was probably dedicated to St Spyridon.
