In early 1841, armed members of the Cretan revolutionary organizations in Athens disembarked in Selino district with the aim of provoking a rebellion, taking advantage of the disagreement between the Sultan and Mehmet Ali. The consuls of the Great Powers and Greece attempted to intercede to prevent the rebellion and encourage the revolutionaries to depart, which they did in May of the same year. The subject is discussed on the basis of 20 relevant documents in Greek or French from the Archive of the French Consulate at Chania, sent to the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs. These include proclamations by the revolutionaries and memoranda to the Great Powers, proclamations by the General Governor of Crete, Mustapha Pasha, and reports on the activities of the consuls. |
