Presentation of Christian Zervos' monumental work L’art de la Crète néolithique et minoenne (The Art of Neolithic and Minoan Crete), an overview of the prehistoric cycle of the island based on the Heraklion Museum archaeological collection. The main illustrated body of the work comprises 807 photographs of archaeological finds dating from the Neolithic to the Subminoan period. In his introduction, the author refers to the course of the excavations, studies the development of Cretan Neolithic and Minoan culture, and addresses important issues such as that of Minoan religion. In conclusion, the main manifestations of Minoan art are analysed, its character and sources examined and its singularity brought to the fore. Some minor drawbacks of the book are noted in the final pages of the review.
