Title
Suda and Spinalonga. When and how they fell to the Turks
Summary PDF
The fortresses of Suda and Spinalonga, which had remained in Venetian hands after the fall of Chandax in 1669, were conquered by the Ottomans in 1715. As the Provveditor General Dolfin informed the Doge on 26 November of that year, both the Provveditors of Suda, Alvise Manio and Paolo Pasquali, and the Provveditor of Spinalonga, Francesco Giustiniani, did their duty but were unable to put up effective resistance. Some extracts from the report submitted by Manio to Dolfin on 23 November 1715, concerning the siege of Suda, are published in Greek translation. The Greek proclamation by the Kapudan Pasha on 4 October 1715, announcing the surrender of Spinalonga, is also published here.
