After the Ottoman conquest of Crete (1669), the Venetians retained the fortresses of Suda and Spinalonga. Many Cretan families sought refuge in Suda, living from fishing, petty trade or begging. Some of these families were allocated small amounts of food by the Venetian State. In the Venetian State Archives is preserved a census of all the Cretan families living in the fortress, in two categories depending on whether or not they received aid. The list was drawn up in December 1713 by the Provveditor Extraordinary of Suda Alvise Manio, and sent to the Maritime Provveditor General Augustino Sagredo. The document is published in Greek translation. |
