It is similar to a series of Late Minoan, Subminoan and Early Hellenic shrines, in the shape of a rectangular chamber with a ledge on one or more sides; figurines and vessels are commonly placed on these. The archaeological finds from the Kavoussi shrine contribute significantly to the study of the origins and development of Early Hellenic art in Crete. They include two representations of a pregnant woman, perhaps portraying a pregnant deity. The cult statue of the sanctuary, only the base of which has been preserved, may also have represented the Great Mother. The dissemination of the cult of the goddess of childbirth in East Crete is thus confirmed. |
