In 1955, work continued on the Heraklion Museum display, the Historical Museum of Crete and Rethymnon Museum were enriched with new acquisitions, the Ierapetra Collection was organised and work began on arranging the Agios Nikolaos Collection. Consolidation and restoration work was carried out at the archaeological sites of Knossos, Phaistos, Tylissos and the Vathypetro Megaron. Certain Byzantine and medieval monuments of Chandax, Rethymnon and other parts of rural Crete were protected. Excavations were carried out at Onythe at Goudeliania in Rethymnon, Panormo in Mylopotamos, Knossos, Kanli Kasteli, the Vathypetro Megaron, Chersonissos, Phaistos, Gortys, Tylissos and the wider Sitia area. There were test surveys of ancient port installations and shipwrecks close to shore. Important chance finds also came to light at various places on the island. |
