He was born in 1887 in Loutraki, Malevizi. He studied in Heraklion, with the assistance of the then bishop Eumenios Xiroudakis, and at the Theological School of Chalki. On his return to Crete, he served as a teacher and a Diocesan Procurator of various bishops. He was ordained Bishop of Lambi and Sphakia in 1936. Nine years later he became President of the Committee for the Collection and Protection of Medieval Monuments of Crete, which contributed, among other activities, to the establishment of the sculpture and icon collections of the Historical Museum. He was a founding member of the Kretika Chronika, served on the Editorial Board of the journal, and published an extensive series of hitherto unpublished ecclesiastical texts in its pages. |
