A detailed description of the part played by the Monastery of Profitis Elias in the Cretan rebellions of the 19th century, divided into four periods: a) 1821-1830, b) 1866, c) 1877, 1878 και d) 1896-97. The analysis is based on unpublished documents from the Monastery Archives, provided in Greek accompanied by a French translation, a description of each manuscript and a general analysis of its contents. For the first period there are registers of munitions and money provided by the Monastery to rebel leaders and villages of Rethymnon and Chania Provinces. For the 1866 rebellion extracts from a secret record of events kept by the Monastery are presented, while for the 1877-78 insurrection we have letters addressed to the Monastery by the Patriarchate and the Revolutionary Committee. Finally, the part played by Abbot Agathangelos in the 1896-97 rebellion is presented, together with a number of letters addressed to him. |
