A printed notification of the obligation to pay military tax, issued by the relevant revenue service of the Ottoman administration in Heraklion, was found in I.S. Alexakis’ family home in the village of Exo Potamoi, Lassithi Prefecture, among other documents referring to events of the years 1792-1898. The amount of tax payable by the Christian inhabitants of the village for the years 1857 and 1858 is entered in handwriting on the document, which is in the Turkish language. The Greek summary of the Turkish document by the Demogerontia (Greek administrative council) of Heraklion, noted under the Turkish text before it was sent, is published here. The recipient may have been the village president. |
