Α description of six copper coins (fulūs) found in Heraklion, dating from the period of the Arab occupation of Crete. Although the coins are in poor condition, their identification is certain. They were discovered in excavations of the foundations of a hotel in 25th of August Street at a depth of a few metres, below a stratum of Venetian structures. Two of the coins are attributed to Abu-Hafs ‘Umar, the first Amir of Crete, and dated to c. 850 AD. The four others bear the name of his son Shu‘aib and are therefore to be dated to the latter’s reign, after 854 AD. |
