Critical edition of the Phyllada tou Gadarou etoi Gadarou, lykou kai alepous diegesis oraia (Chapbook of the Donkey, or the Fine Tale of the Donkey, the Wolf and the Fox). In his introduction to the text, the editor touches on a series of subjects such as Greek publishing production in Venice at the turn of the 20th century, animal literature in the Ancient Greek, Roman and medieval world, the cycle of Western European tales of Reynard the fox, the social classes represented by the three animals of the poem, the poem’s sources, textual tradition and incorporation into the literature of the Cretan Renaissance, the honorific of “Nikos” bestowed on the donkey, the relationship of the Phyllada to the Synaxarion tou Timemenou Gadarou (Synaxary of the Honoured Donkey), and the language of the poem. The edition is accompanied by critical notes, a commentary and a glossary. |
