Publication of a letter dated 1596 by the Venetian physician Onorio Belli, describing the severe earthquake of 16 November 1595 and its effects in the town of Chania. The letter, addressed to Alfonso Ragona, is given in the original Italian and accompanied by a Μodern Greek translation by S. Spanakis. Belli was appointed personal physician to Grimani, the provveditore generale of Candia, in 1583 and accompanied him on his tour of the island. This experience became the basis of Belli’s History of Candia, now lost but preserved in a précis by Apostolo Zeno. The letter is from MS R 122 sup. of the Biblioteca Ambrosiana, Milan. |
