The building of the Zakynthos Archives, which was destroyed in the fire of 1953, contained important archival material on the history of Crete. Many documents concerned the fate of the Cretans who took refuge in Zakynthos following the fall of their homeland to the Turks. Some of these documents had been studied by Leonidas Zois. His notes on the Cretan Kaniolas, Gavalas and Tzen families are published here. The district founded by the Cretan refugees in Zakynthos lay between the churches of Aghios Ioannis Gouzelis, Aghios Andreas Avouris, Episkopiani and Aghios Georgios Petroutsos. The wider area was known as Niochori and Bernardakeika. |
