In 1954, display work in the Heraklion Archaeological Museum and Rethymnon Museum was completed, and the task of reorganizing the three collections in East Crete began. The Historical Museum of Crete was enriched with artifacts from the Byzantine, medieval and early Turkish periods. Restoration work was carried out at Knossos, Phaistos, the Malia Megaron, the Tylisos Megara and the Minoan Villa at Sitia. Preservation work was carried out on a number of monuments from medieval Chandax – Aghios Markos, Panaghia tou Forou [the Virgin Mary in the Market Place] and Panaghia ton Stavroforon [Our Lady of the Crusaders], and was continued on the Harbour Fortress and mosaics at Hersonissos. Excavations were carried out on the Onythe outcrop at Goudeliana, Rethymnon prefecture; in the town of Sitia and environs; at Viannos, Katsambas, Phaistos and Gortyna. Noteworthy finds also came to light at various locations on the island. |
