The existence of crypt sanctuaries in Minoan houses and occasionally in tombs is substantiated by archaeological finds at Knossos, Amnissos, Vathypetro, Prasa by Heraklion, at the Megaron Nirou, Malia, Tylissos, Megaron Sklavokampou, Phaistos, Aghia Triada, Koumasa, Apesokari, Gournia, Psyra, Palaikastro and Zakros, as well in places outside Crete, such as Mycenae and Fylakopi on Milos. The excavation data are here subjected to comparative study so as to ascertain the character and form of such sacred areas, which were usually located beneath other sanctuaries and near rooms used for preparing ceremonies, in pits and “temple repositories”. Figurines, ritual wares and instruments, sacred symbols and the remnants of sacrifices have been found in the crypts and immediately adjacent rooms. |
