Publication of the excavation of a Late Minoan tomb located outside the village of Pachyammos, Ierapetra. In the interior there were three bath-like sarcophagi. Human bones were also found in a pit, above which a clay tripod altar had been placed, quite possibly aimed at propitiating the dead person. Finds also included an ornamented cylindrical pyxis, a false-necked amphora, a shallow stone vessel and a bronze weighing dish, which is in all likelihood an allusion to the “talents” of Zeus and the weighing of souls after death. Examination of the types and subject matter of the archaeological finds leads to the conclusion that they can be dated to the LM IIIB period, apart from the pyxis, which may belong to late LM IIIA. |
