Summary PDF
Thessaloniki historian I. K. Vasdravellis has spent a number of years studying and publishing translations of the Turkish archives in Macedonia. He has already completed the first two volumes, consisting of documents from Thessaloniki, Veroia and Naoussa. The archive material published contains sporadic references to Crete, extending in time from the eve of the Ottoman conquest to the mid-19th century. In some cases they verify previously known information, while in others they shed light on unknown aspects of Cretan history. Vrasdavellis’ publications in the Society for Macedonian Studies series could act as a catalyst for similar initiatives involving the systematic publication of Turkish archives in Crete and other areas of Greece, while also serving as methodological models.
