Summary PDF
Fernand Chapouthier was born in Bordeaux in 1899. He attended the Ecole Normale Supérieure and was a member of the French School of Archaeology at Athens. Chapouthier participated in digs at Philippoi, Samothrace, Delos and, above all, at Malia. On returning to France he pursued an academic career. In 1948 he was appointed co-director of the Ecole Normale Supérieure. A significant part of his published work relates to Cretan prehistory, including archaeological finds from the Malia area, Minoan script, seal ring production, the internal history of Cretan civilization, relations with the East etc. Other studies focus on classical and post classical Greece, issues concerning Greek religion and mythology, and on the excavations he carried out. Chapouthier also published Euripides’ Phoenissae, while two of his books were on contemporary Greece.
