Summary PDF
Following the Ottoman conquest of Crete, Cretan refugees settled on Zakynthos. Notarial deeds concerning them were preserved in the Zakynthos Archives building, which was destroyed in the fire of 1953. Summaries or copies of some documents had previously been made by chief archivist Leonidas Zois. Published here are: the summary of a power of attorney granted by Ioannis Melissinos to Frangiskos Foscarini in 1673, to collect money from the Cretan monastery of Panaghia Akrotiriani; the will made by Nikolos Mousouros from Rethymnon in 1678; and the entry in the minutes of a Zakynthos notary, concerning guarantees given on the eve of the fall of Chandax by Vartholomaios Siropoulos, ephhemerios (senior priest) of Aghios Spyridon in that town, for the safeguarding of icons from the church.
