Codex 191 in Xenophontos Monastery on Mount Athos contains two works by Cretan man of letters and preacher Gerasimos Vlachos: Kata Ioudaion [Against Jews] and Peri tes tou Moameth threskeias kai kata Tourkon [On the religion of Mohammed and against Turks]. They were copied on Corfu in 1671 by the Cretan priest-monk Kalliopios Kalliergis, while Vlachos was staying on the island. They ought to be published and compared to similar, older diatribes. Further reference to Vlachos was found in Codex 6 at the Monastery of Aghioi Theodoroi at Aroania. The manuscript derives from Vrontisi Monastery on Crete, and was copied by Emmanuel Depos, the abbot’s brother. Among other things, it includes a written memorial reminiscence of 1648, most probably by Depos, claiming that he delivered sketches for icons to Vlachos in that year. |
