| Publication of the report on the transactions of the Board of Governors of the Society of Cretan Historical Studies for 1953. Activities focussed on the development of the Historical Museum, the promotion of Cretological Studies, the protection of monuments and securing funding. The Museum began operation, the guidebook and other tourist material was published, and new exhibits were acquired. New material was also acquired for the library and the document and photograph archive. Information was collected for the publication of a Dictionary of Place-Names and a catalogue of the island’s monuments. Provision was made for the financial support of historical and folklore studies. A memorial conference for Stephanos Xanthoudides was organised. Efforts were made to restore the doorway of the Ittar Megaron and the Hersonissos mosaic. The Society lost some of its older members and gained new ones. |
