In 1953, work continued on the restoration of Heraklion Museum and the display of Rethymnon Museum and the Neapoli, Aghios Nikolaos and Ierapetra collections. Preservation work continued at Knossos, Phaistos and the Megara of Vathypetro and Tylissos. Attempts were made to rescue important medieval monuments of Heraklion, Chania and Rethymnon. Stabilisation work was carried out on the churches of Panaghia Lambini and Ai-kyr-Giannis, the Hersonissos fountain and the Villa Dionysos. Excavations were carried out in the areas of Vathypetro, Sitia, Piskokefalo, Praisos, Kritsa, Modi, Aghios Nikolaos and Katsambas. The excavations of the British School at Knossos, the Italian School at Phaistos and the French School at Malia continued. New archaeological sites were identified and remarkable chance finds came to light at various locations on the island. |
