Part of an inscribed plaque of white marble was discovered during building work on a house in Aghios Nikolaos, Lassithi. The plaque may be dated to the late 3rd or early 2nd century BC on the basis of the writing style. It probably originates from the area of the ancient agora. It contains the severely truncated text of a peace and alliance treaty of a king of Pergamon, perhaps Eumenes II, with the ancient city of Lato Pros Kamara and its neighbouring Olous. The missing parts of the text are completed on the basis of the standard formulas and language of similar Cretan treaties, as well as historical criteria. |
