Title
syntactical notes on Medieval and Modern Greek
Summary PDF
The construal of the verb “πονώ” (to hurt), with the person who is hurting as the subject and the part of the body in which the pain is located as the object, is found in many regional dialects of Modern Greek, as well as in Medieval and Ancient Greek texts. This is an analogical influence from the construal of "αλγώ" (to suffer pain), following the semantic identification of the two verbs. The syntactic construal of the adjective "γεμάτος" (full) and the verbs "γέμω" and "γεμίζω" (to fill) with the accusative preceded by an article, expressing the material of which something is full, is also noted in many regional dialects of Modern Greek. In this case, too, it is a relic of older medieval usage, though with no roots in antiquity. The choice of an accusative preceded or not by an article in each case is dictated by metrical necessity.
