In the village of Souyia, on the border of Selino and Sphakia districts was discovered a basilica which may be dated to the middle or the second half of the 6th century AD. The floor of the central nave and the narthex is covered with remarkable mosaics depicting geometrical and animal subjects. The monument must already have suffered considerable damage by the 7th century. Its state of preservation deteriorated during the building of a newer church on its foundations, following its recent discovery. The architectural structure and decoration of the basilica are presented, together with the stylistic criteria on the basis of which it was dated. |
