Codex 254 of the Metochi of the Holy Sepulchre of Constantinople includes 45 speeches by Nectarios of Jerusalem. This, the fullest and most remarkable collection of his ecclesiastical teachings and orations, was probably made under his successor Dositheos in the late 17th century. The conditions of copying and the history of the manuscript are examined. A list of the orations is provided, with notes on their time and place of writing and delivery, any editions and the manuscript tradition. There is a selection of the most important information they contain on contemporary figures and events, with an evaluation of the overall character and value of the collection. Nectarios is thus shown to be one of the most important Orthodox preachers of the 17th century. |
