Evidence relating to the life of Ergoteles, the first athlete of Cretan descent to win events at all major games, though for his victories he was crowned as a citizen of Himera. A bronze found at Olympia before the Second World War was identified as a significant portion of the epigram Pausanias saw beneath the statue of Ergoteles. On the basis of this find, the author proposes a reconstruction of the entire four-verse epigram listing the athlete’s victories. Though Pindar gives the reasons why Ergoteles was forced to abandon Knossos, no mention of his birthplace is made in the epigram, which emphasizes that Himera was his adopted home. |
