Group B of the manuscripts transmitting Synesius of Cyrene’s first hymn has άλιμα (alima) or άλημα (alema) or άλμα (alma) noted before the word γένος (genos) in line 292. This word does not belong to the original text, nor does it scan. In all likelihood it was later added by a copyist, who wished to indicate in this manner that the second half of the line in the original was illegible, because a stain (aleimma) had dirtied the page. Other manuscripts of the text may have been used to restore the passage. |
