One of the most significant cultural events in 1952 was the foundation of the Heraklion Historical Museum and partial display of its exhibits, thanks to the efforts of the Society of Cretan Historical Studies and funding from the Heraklion Charitable Foundations, the Reserve Fund and the Municipality of Heraklion. The museum is housed in the residence which Andreas Kalokerinos bequeathed for the purpose in his will. The Early Christian, Byzantine, Venetian and Turkish sculpture rooms are already complete, as are those housing Greek and Latin inscriptions. Work in rooms holding the Byzantine, mediaeval, history and folklore collections is expected to be completed soon, together with the reconstruction of a Cretan village house. Lastly, the museum guide is being compiled. |
